Have A Fantastic Yogi Headstand Weekend You Guys!

Posted on May 6th, 2011 in Daily Musings

A few days ago, in hot vinyasa class, my teacher Marko, who I am obsessed with, because his name is Marko, was all OKAY SO IF YOU ANY OF YOU GUYS HAVE A YOGI HEADSTAND PRACTICE, YOU CAN GO AHEAD INTO IT.

Now, shit like this always makes me jealous because, NO, I don’t HAVE a yogi headstand practice but now that you mention it, I CAN’T THINK OF A SINGLE THING I WANT MORE. IN MY ENTIRE LIFE.

I’m usually too shy to be like hey, I have no idea how to do that but can you help me?

But the other day, Marko came right over to me and was like, feel like giving it a shot?

And I was like YES, TEACH ME MASTER.

And he was like OKAY! So first you want to balance your knees on your bent triceps…

And oh, how we all laughed.

I can’t balance much on my bent triceps, people. My triceps, like most women’s triceps, are not exactly my strongest attribute. HOWEVER, P90X has freaking been CRUSHING THOSE and when I tried to move my knee to my tricep, it STAYED THERE. And then the OTHER ONE DID.

WHILE I WAS BALANCING ON MY HEAD, RIGHT? ‘CUZ IT’S A *HEAD*STAND OH MY GOD DO I HAVE TO EXPLAIN EVERYTHING TO YOU PEOPLE?!

So, then Marko told me to “suck it in” and then try to raise my legs off my triceps.

This was a fail. I think I was too scared. And knees to triceps was the farthest I could go that day.

BUT LAST NIGHT, BEHOLD! After a long run, I decided to try again.

The Roommate kept overhearing random grunts and “MARKO SAID THIS…” and then finally a shriek of I THINK I CAN DO IT!!! and he came running to watch.

This is the result of that encounter.

I think I hold the actual headstand for about .2 seconds.

BUT OH! THE PRIDE. I like how I narrate what Marko has told me as I’m trying to get into it. “Now, Marko said SUCK IT IN…”

Oh, sometimes I think I’m cute.

Other times I think I have SERIOUS problems.

(Both?)

What are you guys doing this weekend!?

I have a twin-free weekend and a late Italian class tomorrow instead of an early one so my plan is to be as lazy as possible. Sunday is Mother’s Day but I have musical improv class so…Rita might have to enjoy my love for her from afar. I DON’T KNOW YET. I’m definitely going to send her a gift. I’m thinking RITAlin.

GET IT?

Sigh.

Sorry.

Anyway, have an amazing weekend you guys! HEADSTAND IT UP! Apparently, it helps with numerous emotional problems! I haven’t experienced anything specific yet but you never know. Maybe randomly this afternoon after I try it again, I will reach Enlightenment.

Or I will just get hungry and go make a smoothie. Which just happened this morning.

(1 banana, 2 Tbsp dark chocolate hemp protein powder, 1 Tbsp ground flaxseed, 3/4 c.ish unsweetened almond milk, ice, copious amounts of peanut butter = Enlightenment.)

OKAY BYE!

  1. THIS MAKES ME SO JOYFUL! Happy Handstand Weekend!

  2. I completely understand your pride. I did my first head stand a few weeks ago, all the while thinking “there is no way I can do this”. I did it in class, and the teacher had to help me lift my legs up AND we were doing them next to a wall…. but I still totally did it! I was boasting for days. So congrats to you on doing it alone NOT against a wall or anything! I still cannot get anything to rest on my triceps (the headstands we did involved putting our forearms on the ground beside our heads).

  3. I just have to say…you make me laugh SO good sometimes! Thanks for that. I think you are awesome. Happy M!others Day Rita!

  4. Thanks you guys!

Keep at it Christine! I’ve done it that way too. I actually prefer to NOT use the wall…for some reason it makes me feel claustrophobic? So it’s harder for me. Super weird, right!? Yoga is so awesome.

  5. That’s amazing, Laura, but can you do this?

  6. My mom has been doing yoga since it’s initial flush of popularity in the 60s/70s, and she is quite proud of having figured out the headstand. She still does it regularly, in her now-retired, arthritic state. Pretty amazing. :)

Something to aspire to. And congrats on a successful headstand!
