On Gift Giving
Posted on November 4th, 2010 in Daily Musings
One of the best gifts I ever got was from my friend Ed when I was a senior in high school. Right before I left for college, Ed made me a hitchhiking sack. You know? What do you call that? That infamous hobo-esque bandana tied to a stick thing? ANYBODY?
He filled it with my favorite things including pear flavored Jelly Belly jellybeans, little cartoons he drew just for me and the best country music mixtape of all time which I still have in my car and which I still listen to from time to me.
I…FALL…TO PIECEEEEEEES! EACH TIME IIIIII SEE YOUR FAAAAACE…
And you? Best gifts you’ve ever received? Best gifts you’ve ever given?
Talk to me people. I’m curious.

There was the year my husband let me pick out the car…
More than that though, was the bracelet my dad made for me by adding a charm every year from when I was 7 until I was 23. The year he stopped and my husband started they accidently chose the same charm.
Um. Heather?
You win. That was incredible.
I think it’s called a hobo pack.
The best gift I ever gave is probably a concert ticket to see The Who. I can’t think of anything that would top that, but I suppose it would depend on the recipient. The best gift I’ve ever received is friendship. Kind of sappy, I suppose, but true.
After my Dad died, a friend of mine gave me a small beautiful picture frame that he had inscribed with:
“Every time I think of you, I hug you in my heart”
I have a photo of my Dad and I in it from when I was a small girl feeding ducks and he’s watching over me.
It’s on my desk and I look at it several times a day. I love it.
the real (boring) answer in bindle, in case that was going to be stuck in your brain and you couldn’t get it out.
When I moved to England for grad school, I have my mom and my best friend (and kept one myself) bracelets with a real working compass that said “never far” on the bottom. i thought it was nice to have something to remind me of them, and them of me.
But maybe the best present I’ve given is a collage that I made in secret of the trip my boyfriend and I took to Spain this past spring. He was so shocked that all he could say was “Ive never featured in a collage before” and I think he cried a little. I wish I could think of a way to make him feel that loved every day.
Mixed tapes are awesome. emotionally and musically, I know I have a few that I will probably keep until no one even knows what a tape player is.
Scratch that, the best gift I’ve ever received is the G.I. Joe hovercraft.
Either that or Jetfire.
Shockwave was pretty cool, too. But his head fell off. He also made all these great ray gun sounds. My parents were not pleased about that.
Tim, remember when you kept talking to yourself in my comments section?
Seriously.
That is now.
When you end a blog post with, “Talk to me, people. I’m curious,” I’m happy to oblige. So which one is your favorite, Laura? Keep in mind that the G.I. Joe hovercraft floats in the bathtub.
I can’t answer you. I’m just going to sigh heavily.
I know. It’s hard to pick between so much awesomeness.
