Knock Knock, It’s Rejection
Well, kids.
Despite being asked for more material in the room and having a knock-out audition for myself, personally, I was not called back for the NYU master’s program therefore: I did not get into NYU this year.
PROS INCLUDE:
*Not taking on $160,000 in student loans
*The fact that I felt rock solid about my performance. Used to music theatre auditions, a graduate school asking you for FOUR MONOLOGUES, two of which are Shakespeare, is intimidating to say the least. And now? ROCKSTARRRRRRRRR.
* I will have those four coached monologues on hand for any auditions in the future so I can now audition for musicals AND straight plays AND more graduate schools that will not accept me.
* Did not let the audition waiting room intimidate me at all. In fact, chatted up a fellow auditioner, a GIRL and made FRIENDS. We even exchanged NUMBERS. She is beautiful and smart and younger than me (EVERYONE IS YOUNGER THAN ME) and I hope we really do get coffee. Incidentally, she was in my group, was asked for all FOUR of her monologues (compared to my being asked for three) and she was called back. I’m going to just go out on a limb here and say that I might’ve had a better chance at a callback if she wasn’t so dang awesome. Goal: BEFRIEND THE DANG AWESOME CALLED BACK GIRL
* Had a really solid preparation/warm up. This is key because sometimes I think about getting prepped as a joke especially when I’m in a musical that requires me to run onto the stage for five seconds, sing harmony behind the lead, run off, change costumes and then sit backstage for an hour. What exactly am I prepping FOR? But monologues are different, straight theater is different and I really had to exercise that preparation muscle. We were given five minutes in a warm up room before we went in and I pulled out every relaxation exercise in my book, loosening up my body and focusing my mind. When the knock came at the door to tell me it was time to go audition, I was relaxed, breathing deeply and ON TOP OF MY SHIT.
* I took time in between monologues to let the previous character fall away. I also took this time to reposition myself physically and to get a darn good image of the person I was talking to. VOILA! SUCCESS!
* Got the chance to show someone my work. Got the chance to be the center of attention, if only for five minutes.
CONS:
* God, let’s skip the cons, okay? The one big con, obviously is: DID NOT GET INTO NYU GRADUATE SCHOOL. FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL.
But hey look at those positives! And let’s drown the negatives the best way a single gal knows how:
With lots of calories and sugar.
Call me a cliché but man, rejection never tasted so sweet.

I have two more auditions to go (having only applied to three schools) and I will let you know how they go. Let’s just say that if I get rejected again, I will post a picture of a cupcake. If I get a callback, I will post a picture of something else. But what? Suggestions?
Stay tuned for my Flashback Friday post. FINALLY! Holler at me weekend! WOOOOOOOOOOO!

Well, I like or more love animals. So a picture of any kind of animals would do it for me
ha!
or maybe just a pic of your biggest grin of satisfaction? xD
How about a picture of you giving the finger to NYU?
And please don’t count yourself out of the next two auditions. You have worked too hard over the past few years. NYU asked you for a third piece, so they definitely saw something in you. Hopefully the next two schools see the true rockstar that is Laura Dlug!
Oh… vanilla bean cupcakes, yum. Could you please post a picture of a WHOLE cake that says CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Okay so far we have animals, me giving the finger and a WHOLE CAKE.
I think we can find a way to combine all three. We’ll see. Audition #2 is tomorrow! Woot woot!
